Paintings | Things comes down in the next couple of days. A big Thank You to the Riverside Arts Project and everyone involved there for helping me orchestrate my first solo exhibition. Art Shows and 30 Character Auctions

Hey, guys. Been working on the show for January. Got a long road ahead but I'm making steady progress. The Riverside Arts Council is making this a fun space to work in and I've called in some big guns to make this a memorable show. I hope I can do them justice.

In other news, I've been working with Dale Wilson of DWAP Productions on a weekly comic project at Magnificent Creatures among other things. I've also drawn a few characters for the kind Jamie Gambell (writer of Omnitarium and The Hero Code, to boot) as he was (and I vicariously) participating in the "30 Characters in November" project. He set out to materialize 30 original characters within the time frame of November's 30 days and I was lucky enough to help out on a few. Here's some of them:

This inspired me to draw 30 characters from geek lore throughout the month (see if you know what film or story I've gathered them from). I'm traditionally one to bite off more than I can chew (bad for business) and ended up drawing ten. These are up for auction and you should totally pick one up for friends who are art enthusiasts or geek enthusiasts or art geeks or people that appreciate things. I'll be using profits to buy people Christmas gifts. Let that guilt weigh heavy on your soul! Enjoy:

30 Characters... Kind of

November is "30 Characters in 30 Days" month in the INDYstry. I have a lot of work to do besides this but it seems doable. Stipulation is to come up with your OWN characters. That is a difficult feat to be sure. I'm going to opt for something a little different:

I'll attempt 30 small drawings of characters that I am a fan of. I'm using the terms "characters" and "fans" quite loosely. I'll put each one up for sale on ebay (or some other online venue should I find one more apt) once I've posted it here.

Don't expect some shitty drawing of Elvis or Marilyn Monroe (although I suppose those would definitely move). DO expect nerd/geek movement characters. That will be more fun for me. I want to have fun and I want the work to show it. Christmas is coming up, guys. Buy some for your friends.

Bad Art and Good Drawings (bad teaching)

Hey, everybody. Bad art lesson in vicinity. Prepare for preaching: I'm approached with two comments regarding art pretty consistently. Probably more specifically about drawing. People always feel it necessary to relay the idea that they "can't/don't know how to draw" or "drawing is hard."

If you seek a good retort to these statements you may want to navigate away from this blog. I'm no expert on the subject. I draw. I studied drawing. I am occasionally commissioned to do so. I don't have a teaching credential. People aren't clamoring after my lessons (if indeed I had any). Compelled though, I am, to disclose my response to these people (I am also clearly not the most cunning linguist).

I interpret drawing as communication. Hieroglyphics and cave paintings were used to communicate. Drawings and images are ideas illustrated to allow our minds to grasp something someone else is trying to say. They can't put it into words OR it is BETTER communicated through an image.

People assume that you must be talented to draw. Not true. If you're looking to develop a masterpiece rendering with intricate details and abstract metaphors then you may need some practice and time. If you want to communicate a basic idea, a good drawing is not out of reach.

What do you see here?

That's right, it's a brothel. No? Didn't guess brothel? Did I not communicate this idea clearly to you? Damn. I had this idea and I tried to relay it to you through an image without words. It appears I have failed. This was bad communication on my part. That was a BAD DRAWING.

What about here?

If your mind wandered ANYWHERE near the inklings stick figure, man, ugly stick figure, or person, you have grasped the idea I was trying to convey in the image. I wanted to draw a man, stick figure, or person. I wanted to show THAT to you and by you UNDERSTANDING that, you have affirmed that I've communicated clearly. THAT is a GOOD DRAWING.

Drawing doesn't have to be beautiful. It has to communicate clearly.

That's only one aspect of drawing. A basic one.

Visited Comikaze Expo as well this past weekend. It was nice to go as a fan for a change. I'll be registering for a table there as soon as they're available. Make sure you're there for the annual migration of the Elviras:

They probably won't migrate in 2012 as this was Elvira's last con appearance. You should attend anyways for the substantial amount of creators and panels they were able to pull. Impressive, guys.

Also, Ice was there! No one dresses as Ice! Coooool...

Picked up some comics (gasp!) including but not limited to the new I, Vampire and the first Surrogates TPB. Both good reads (duh).

I'm working on comics sparsely as I prep for January but 140 #5 and new Dark Mouse are definitely in the works along with a few others that I can't name at this point. Make sure you're reading Magnificent Creatures.

LBCC Recap 2011

Last weekend I attended the reception of Behind the Curtain at Soundbite Studios in LA as well as exhibited in artist alley at Long Beach Comic Con. Let's take a look at some pics.

As always, the Soundbite show was curated by the man, Joshua Keen Valencia. He was inspired to create a show on one canvas with many different artists. Turned out quite well. If you're STILL not aware of Josh, you will be. I guarantee it.

Although I had work up at KGB in LA as well I didn't make it to that show. The closing on November 25 sounds promising :)

Besides, I DID enjoy a full weekend of nerdism at LONG BEACH COMIC CON! Evan Spears and I traversed the terrain yet again. Enjoy these tasty morsels below.

Wonder Woman stopped by our table for a "Better Sketch" which Evan or I will do for a slightly higher fee than your standard "Sketch." This woman knows quality sketches. Evan turned this out......and I this:

Zombie vomit:This man, is by far, the busiest I've grown up watching and ever had to run to get a picture with. I once hopped over some chairs at a panel to get a sketch and photo from the master Jim Lee. THIS man? I stammered. HARD. I knew he would be at the con for a panel (which I didn't make) and as luck would have it, I saw him on the way to my booth. I thought, "Holy shit. That's Seth Green. Quick! Get a photo with him." He was being attentive to friends and I was standing there like an idiot with a nerd boner. We totally saw each other and as I stood there like an idiot and said nothing he walked away. Embarrassing. Awkward. Super fucking lame. Totally froze up. That was a bummer.

Anyway, after that I manned up to every other opportunity (big or small) I had that day and as luck would have it, guess who I saw dashing down our aisle in yet another hurry: Seth Green. Totally stopped that dude for a photo. Actually, it was more like, "Hey, dude. Sorry to bother yo-" and in a hushed, bearded and hatted voice (I can only assume so no one would recognize him and stop him for photos) Seth Green said, "It'scoolIt'scoolIt'scoolIsitonIsitonC'mereGetreadyAlrightHowisitDoublecheckDoublecheckIsitgoodIsitgood?"

And with that, he was gone. The whole time we never once stopped moving. Notice how both of our arms are out? He had to take control and shoot the photo himself. It felt like a scene from the Graduate. That's how often he takes these photos. That's how skilled he is at taking them.
One day I will be able to hold engaging conversation with interesting people I look up to. For now, I have a picture with Seth Green and it is good.
The next event I had tasked myself with was moderating a panel: standing in front of an audience and guiding a conversation between professionals I had invited to share their knowledge with said audience. I didn't fall on my face or cause a proverbial train wreck and aside from some technical difficulties (and a room change) everything went off without a hitch for a last-minute panel. My guests were super insightful and I had a great time learning more about them and their work and new perspectives on the online arena and comics. The end of the con provided one last Better Sketch:
Yes, she had a tattoo. No, I couldn't see it properly. I normally ask to take a photo of a patron (see above) but this time my patrons offered to take a photo with me (never happens)! I guess it's happened:
Sustenance was required after a long weekend of conning. What better fuel than a pie?

Not just any pie. Evan ordered some Anchovy and Salami combo whilst I opted for fruit: sausage and mandarin oranges. Yes, sausage is a fruit. We were quite proud of our choices (we take our victories as we can) as they had never been ordered before and we set a new standard for "crazy" at Sharky's in Long Beach. I urge you to order these pizzas. Beware: they are fucking great.

That was Long Beach. A good time to be sure. Dark Mouse came, saw, and conquered the hearts of those that read his story. He shall return. More than likely in some online incarnation. 140 continues in at least one more foreseeable issue and hopefully something more. Long Beach Comic Convention (+ Horror!) 2011

Totally gonna be at Comic Con in Long Beach this weekend. Visit Evan Spears and I. Visit us at the panel Writing Comic Books With Twitter as well. We'll be chatting with Sheika Lugtu, Dale Wilson, and Karl Altstaetter. I've got new shirts. I've got 140 issue #4. We've got prizes to give out at the panel (Sunday at 4 in room 103 B). I've got art in two shows in LA: Soundbite Studios on Friday and KGB Gallery the SAME NIGHT! It's been a busy week. My new mini-comic DARK MOUSE is available in HALLOWEEN GREEN! Super limited. Been busier than I thought. Having a real job takes up a lot of time = lame. Still making things = rad.

Here's a photo sent in by one awesome patron of the arts. Jacob Sirof snapped this pic up of his daughter and a cutout I originally included in an installation in Corona. Aptly dubbed "Take Your Photo With Me," is a project where I will release miscellaneous works into the wild after they've performed their duties as part of a larger work. Re-appropriated and re-purposed. Take that, hippies. Stay awesome, Wynter.

This is a piece I did at the J-Town Summer Sessions (promo'd in my last blog entry) which was painted under the blazing sun whilst I attained mad burns and blisters. No pain, no art. No, wait...Below are some snaps from Descanso Gardens: a good place for dates and to make you want to garden until you realize how lazy you are.

Scoped the MOCA Graffiti Exhibit on the last day (thanks, Banksy). By far, one of the most comprehensive visual collections of the history of street art that has ever been assembled. An Opinion for A Change

I'm going to talk about where I was raised: Fontana, CA. If you've heard of Fontana you more than likely heard some poor description or lackluster tale about "a good place to leave." I'm guilty of perpetuating these stories myself as are many good friends.

As I've grown so too has a sense of pride that I never had. I admire the community. It's a good place. The stories you may have heard sell the city short. There are things happening and moreover there is potential. There is opportunity.

I am genuinely disappointed when people demean the city that I've grown in because I am a part of it. As of this writing, if you were to Google "Fontana," one of the highest links leads to a video: reporter Leanne Suter is struck by a BB gun pellet while reporting in Fontana.

She is safe and police have made arrests. I'm genuinely glad this story was told. However, I wish that other stories about Fontana were told. Yesterday, one of the largest art events I've seen the city organize was held: Arts Festival. All summer, Movie Mondays and Summer Concerts have blossomed in nearly every park in the community.

I realize that, to an extent, I'm perpetuating ill stories once again but I'm also setting a goal to do a little good: I aim to start promoting positive news and develop a more appealing description of Fontana. Along the way I'm sure I'll find more opportunities to do a little good in the community.

This August 2nd and 5th, Fontana celebrates National Night Out and Cruise Night, respectively. I'll be at both events.

Busy week. Started with a community art show with prizes in Corona. Took 3rd place. Stoked.
The gallery I intern at allowed me to utilize a window space at the same show for a simple installation. Double stoked:

I'd like to thank all the artists that came out and participated in the event. Truly a team effort and we were able to bring a lot of people out. Of course, I'd like to thank all the patrons that came to see us.

On a sad note, the event was shut down just shy of the actual scheduled end time due to some "safety issue." No worries. We meant to hold a live-art event in Fontana and bring people out to see it. That was accomplished. Good work, everyone. Visit Jolly Jogurt and eat their yogurt.

Blue Diamonds, Zombies, and Sat Fest

It's been a long, busy week. Mostly hanging things in Riverside. Made lots of drawings and one is a print, Kai of the Living Dead,...
available tomorrow at Blue Diamond Comics in Las Vegas. Each an original since I'll be supplying ink to them individually. Shout out to the lovely Kaileah Lani. I'll be at Blue Diamond signing and selling 140, The Burn Issue, and all my prints from 11a-2p. Gonna try to beat that holiday traffic. Here's a more other drawing for good measure:
That one was done for Saturation Fest, which is where I was hanging paintings and such. Go see it this weekend on Mission Inn Ave in Downtown Riverside and send me a pic since I won't be in town before it gets tagged up (please).

The Sat Fest staff worked their asses off to put on a group exhibition that is worth the viewing.

Over the past month or so, I (or my work) have appeared at (read: busted my ass to get to) 5 different comic book and/or art events including but not limited to (okay, maybe) Long Beach Comic Expo, the Soundbite Studio anniversary show, Wizard World Comic Con Anaheim, Free Comic Book Day, and most recently the Art Crawl Experience of Anaheim.

I've only once attended a Free Comic Book Day event in my life and it left a bad taste in my mouth. However, to get my book onto the shelves of 4 Color Fantasies I gotta make myself available for a signing date AND as an exhibitor on Free Comic Book Day (among other stipulations). As soon as I arrived, I realized that store is doing it right.
Some people I met at this event drove UP from San Diego! That's Comic-Con! They drove two hours away from that to the Inland Empire. The operation 4Color has going there is impressive to say the least. Seriously? A LINE to get IN? Well done.

I had my infamous (probably not) digital 2nd issue of 140 available in print form as my contribution to the free goodness. People seemed to dig it. Sold some more other comics/prints, too.

It's always nice when people participate in the contests I administer via twitter. I was stoked to get this high five and release a print into the world.
And a second one shortly thereafter.
The homies came out to show love.

Even sold a print of an old, school project. In hindsight, I could have used it on future work. The patron seemed pleased though. Look at that smile.

All in all, a grand day. I'll definitely be working/shopping there again.

The next weekend held an Art Crawl, which is not much different than an Art Walk (except for the large amount of gloves and knee pads). Walked around early to get some pics of a couple set ups including the hot rods and some of the music doing a sound check.

My space was huge in relation to what I had brought. Next time, I'm bringing a mobile studio like my neighbors. The guys next to me deserved WAY more traffic than hit em. The main issue was that we were out of sight compared to the rest of the artists. Great amount of space but out of the way.

In any case, I had an awesome time. They were funny as hell throughout the event. These are the guys you want to barbecue and get drunk with. I took a couple snaps of Jack and Tiki...

...and threw em in my piece.
They made this with the help of some friends.
They're doing it right.

Lastly but definitely not leastly, I'd like to get more involved with the art community in my city so I'm throwing a party. Check out Treat IV Your Gland on June 17. I've curated this live-art event at Fontana's Jolly Jogurt. I'm super honored that people would be down to paint with me and we shall have ourselves a time. Come one, come all. Eat yogurt. Talk with artists. Be merry. Repost!

I also realize I'm setting up shop during the Green Lantern film release. Incidentally: everyone that shows up with a GL ticket stub will get a discounted print! Tell your friends.

WWA Recap & Thangs

Last weekend I tabled at Wizard World Anaheim 2011. First time for everything. Saw some familiar faces and hopefully in the future will see a lot more. Here's a sandwich I ate. Fuck those hotel food prices.

I sat beside one Nat Gertler. Nice guy and an Eisner Award nominee as I understand it. Enjoy this super creepy photo of him.
To my starboard side (fuck you, fact-checkers) sat the enjoyable Neil Segura and Ray Mendivil. This is the duo behind the comic Forever Freshman. Nice guys. Cool comic. If you like fun comics or ever wondered what those band geeks from high school are doing, this book is for you. Spoiler alert: they're making comics. Here's me as I read the book.

So I was stoked on the news that the Power Rangers (of the Mighty Morphin' persuasion) would attend this convention. I made a drawing early last week that I turned into a print titled "Some Cool Dudes" for the con. More importantly, I included the Black Ranger on that print. Guess who I found and totally gave my print to? I gave Walter Emanuel Jones one of those prints because I grew up on that guy. One day I'll (actually) grow up. Until then, I'm gonna keep drawing Power Rangers.
Scratch one off the bucket list. Really nice dude. He gave me one of his prints in return (I'm gonna frame that shit). Also, I walked up JUST as he was answering the question that you all want to ask him (which he apparently gets a lot): "Was it racism that lead to the Black Ranger being a black guy?" The answer is legit. I won't bore you with it (I'd probably get some facts wrong anyhow). Short answer: "No."

Thank you to everyone who came through to the convention. Nothing is set in stone but I may be at Wizard World Los Angeles in September this year (and I've totally asked for a panel there).

LBCEx 2011

So it was that the Long Beach Comic Expo came and went. A smaller con to be sure. Yet not one to be underestimated.

Evan Spears, James Mitchell and myself came, saw, and conquered.

Here's some people who were nice enough to sacrifice their hard-earned green for some comics:

Sporting the pink top is our contest winner, "Baby Dee (Day?)." I don't know either but she was cool enough to let me teach her how to use her phone to follow us via twitter. Consequently, she won our contest!
This dude was obviously on break and walked in with his partner. Neither one of them knew what the hell to make of the convention but it was pretty nice of them to support the con.

I haven't done a commission in such a long time. So fun. A couple of girls told us that they were looking for drawings of the mutant Gambit. They asked if we had seen one to which we denied but added, "We could draw one for you." I totally drew Gambit and they came back to ask for "Rogue on a bicycle."

This Saturday is the Long Beach Comic Expo. Myself and Evan Spears will rock socks. Be there.

This most recent Tuesday in LA I was lucky enough to be invited by one Alex Chiu and two Ann Matsushima Chiu to act as a live-artist painting a painting and selling some comics and shirts.

So I did.

Back to comics: Have you checked out Creator-Owned yet? Chris Smits has a cool project going that seems to be gaining some momentum. He reviews indy/creator-owned comic books. A really generous effort for those trying to make a mark in the INDYstry.

Wizard World Anaheim 2011

Evenin' ladies and gents. Hope all is well in the land of web. Wizard World Anaheim fast approaches with their start date of April 29 and I'm posting because I was clued in to the pros and cons of printing "con-exclusives" (I really wasn't but I've gone ahead and done it anyway). I've created a WWA limited edition issue #1 of my comic: 140. Essentially, it's the first issue with a limited edition cover. Feast your eyes (or take small portions so there's plenty to go 'round):

Special shout out to Randy for always helping a brother out, just like Shaft. The numbers of these are SUPER limited because I don't want to end up with a ton of site-specific comics at my house. Pussy Shit and Excitement

In case you have a life and haven't already read my posts on facebook or twitter, it's been an exciting two days. It's probably not that big of a milestone to most but it's huge for me. You probably don't give a shit anyway, but I'm geeking on it (who loves repetition?).

I used to go to comic book conventions with friends and see these people I idolize(d) and get starstruck because I'm a huge fucking comics nerd. Not the historical, cataloging type (that didn't work out). I'm more a fan of the art form. When I see a quality book I go nuts. When I see the person that made it? Sweating, man. I get stupid starstruck. It's pretty pathetic. But these guys are masters of their craft and I cower when I stand in their shadow. On the plus side, most of them are the nicest people in the world. They're down to talk to you about something you both love (comics) or grab a beer with you. They appreciate the hustle because they all had to work to get to where they are. Those are the people that get invited to showcase their work.

For the past couple of years, I haven't attended any convention in the recreational sense. I've sat at tables with good friends and tried to peddle my wares. Always buying in. Always splitting costs so we could afford to join the party. I'm always honored that my friends ask me to hustle with them.

By some magical-elf, mystical-creature-conjuring stroke of luck I was invited this year to Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con. I'm still not sure how but I'll find out. My work isn't at the caliber of the people I'm still nervous to meet but I'm working on it. It's an honor to be invited and I'm gonna keep hustling. I'm treating this like I don't know if I'll ever get invited again because I don't.

I want to draw and paint what I want and have something to show for it. I feel like I'm getting there but I've been wrong before.

140 issue #1 is officially up for sale on the interwebz! Buy it at indyplanet or buy it at comicsmonkey. Actually, it's the same price at both stores but with indyplanet I get a bigger percent of the profit, so you should totally buy it at indyplanet!

Issues #2 and #3 of 140 are also printing so get those this April (very soon)!
As soon as I'm out of all my copies of The Burn Issue that will also go up online.

Food and Ills

So I'll be attending what's been dubbed the "Halfway Con" at the Long Beach Convention Center with the relentless Evan Spears. We'll be wheelin' and dealin' and most other "ins" you can think of... Mostly sellin' and drawin' comics.

Here's some shots of things I ate earlier today at a walking LA food tour. Yes, it was awesome as it sounds and our tour was in Little Tokyo. An art prof even gave the tour so I was stoked for that. Also, food. Food.

This is a pin-up for DCastr's book: Kid With A Cape. It's a good, short read if you get the chance. Snatch one up. Also, he's below with fellow contributing artist to 140 #3 Andrea Ueda. She introduced us to Holê Molê. Fish burrito, son. Yes.

This story of this Boogey Man tattoo was personally interesting. Apparently, this man's son couldn't sleep due to the horrible creature occupying his closet. His dad told him to draw the monster. The kid obliged. His dad secretly acquired the illustration and had it tattooed into his skin. He explained to his son, "The Boogey Man won't be bothering you anymore. I caught him and I put him in my boot. He's on my leg now and can't hurt you." After seeing the mark, the kid gave his dad a funny, skeptical look but from then on, he wasn't afraid of a monster in his closet.

I enjoy the story because of the cheese it comes with but also because the illustration becomes something tangible and something so much more than a drawing. It isn't a symbol of the monster once it's on the father's leg. It IS the monster. Captured. Tagged. Put on display. The genie of the lamp. What validates that is the fact that the child doesn't fear it anymore. The illustration had an effect on someone's life. Not because it was a drawing or a symbol but because it was actually a monster.

And if you want to break it down on a physics level, honor the idea that matter cannot exist in two places at once. No matter is ever really destroyed, only changed. The monster exists on a leg but he could not have simply appeared. He existed in the closet before. He was and is real. The monster on the leg is REAL and WAS the monster in the closet because the monster in the closet isn't there anymore.

I'm reading way too far into this.
Also, Stallone's badassery in Cobra made a lasting impression on me. I succumb to my childish impulses.

Comics Burn

Welcome, one and all to the rare and elusive creature known as "A New Blog Post." Many things doing this month (or at the very least some).

First and firstmost, I'm signing comics, drawing things, and chilling with the best-served-chilled artist DCastr at Pulp Fiction in Long Beach. Looking forward to meeting some artists/cool folk at their "Indie Day" event (March 5th). Support the "indies" in this #INDIEstry.

Second and secondmost, I'll be showing paintings at Mosaic in San Diego on March 19th with the homies Joshua Valencia and Alex Chiu. Here's a web-ready image I've been instructed to use to promote said show:
Gonna be a fun one. Also, support the cause of autism research and the like! Dooo it.

Third and thirdmost, #TheBurnIssue (with bonus art by Evan Spears and Jan Remetir!) is finally in the mail and will be for sale in the coming days. A super rare and limited number of them will come signed and singed (upon request).

That's right: a comic about fire that I will burn (lightly) upon request making it an originally charred and readable work of art (probably not the best option for archival-minded folk). Have your fire-extinguishers ready.

On Jan. 22 2011, I'll be in a show at the Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. Go to there.

I'll also be dropping off work in Hollywood (near Los Feliz) for a show on Jan. 27 2011 aptly titled: WILL DO ART FOR FOOD. The curators MiniMogul are asking people bring an unopened can of food as an entry fee. I'll most likely have one, why not? Also, for every piece sold, I'll be donating a portion of the proceeds to a local charity. Thanks for the time. See you there and thangs.

I wanted to release the second issue of 140 today because it's the 2nd of the month and a Tuesday and I enjoy the spelling of the fake word: Twosday. So, in the sequel to issue 1 I'm utilizing quotes from movie sequels sent to me that were 140 characters or less. Check it out. Comment. Tweet. Tell the people.

As I type this I'm listening to Viva-Radio.com. More specifically a playlist titled "120 Minutes, Forever: Whatever, it's cool I guess." Splendora's intro song for Daria just came on...It's as if I'm listening to my early teen angst years...Or everything I remember hearing back then. In more other news, LONG BEACH COMIC CON!

Sorry I didn't update you folks that I would be there. A more specific post I lacked in updating my blog with. Been lagging it lately. I've let you, my thousands and thousands of fans, down. However, here's a full recap of my adventures there:

Got there roughly Thursday night and snapped up this doozy of the convention center which was attached (Yes!) to the hotel that Evan Spears and I stayed at. If you've never met Evan he's a comics making beast (to use one of his coined terms) and draws like nobody's business. We're both independent artists and we both dig comics so we work conventions together.

This here is the parking garage we got lost in. The levels don't match up with those of the hotel so we were a little turned around for a bit.
Found Cat Man Blu (sp?), a small jazz bar down the road, traded our respective comics that we'd peddle for the weekend.
Found some chocolate cake hidden in a tin-foil swan on the walk back to the hotel.
Set up a drawing studio for promo material.
Ah, old video store promo material. You're about to be improved...
The hotel staff was having a pumpkin carving contest. Gotta say they turned out some good stuff.
This man and his car were outside the convention every morning. He looks exactly like you picture the person that drives/built this car would look.

This is your market at a comics convention.
If you noticed in the "set-up" photo we had a sign dictating that people follow us on Twitter to be aware of contests and giveaways that we were conducting. First people to take advantage of this were the people behind @ComixCenter. Follow those guys and their podcast. Which by the way, we were interviewed on and I'll post when that's available and you can hear how terrible I am in interviews. Anyhow, they won some of our comics and t-shirts and stickers. Later on in the day it didn't seem like people were participating too much to our despair. THEN, it just so happens we saw Steve Niles (writer of the comic 30 Days of Night) walk past our table and we shouted for him to come over. He was super gracious and obliged. We talked about conventions and comics and what we had to offer. We said we were giving away stuff and he was even more gracious and became an impromptu winner of our giveaway by letting us dump all kinds of comics on him! Stoked on this and up for anything, we heard that the local aquatic exhibit in town was throwing a party that night and we decided to crash it. Loaded on various amounts of alcohol we proceeded to get lost walking downtown and happened upon people exiting a movie screening. When we left the convention earlier that evening we had passed some lame actor, I had assumed (it was dark and I couldn't see them), who was shouting and trying to hustle people into his latest movie which the screening was for. Evan informed me that the actor from earlier was Tom Jane and he was making his directorial debut (I think) with the screening at the convention. I'm star struck pretty easily and a sucker for bad-ass comics movies and knowing Tom Jane is the Punisher I was kicking myself. But as we passed people exiting the theater we noticed the man himself was there THANKING people for coming out. This man does so much footwork for his projects and it's nice to see an actor so shameless and gracious to his fans. Even two nerds that totally didn't even watch the movie. Mad respect for Tom Jane.

On a side note, the next night we were nearing the exit of the convention center and who should we pass again but Tom Jane complete with unlit cigar in teeth. Hustling yet AGAIN to get people to the second screening of his flick Dark Country. I said, "Tom Jane, you kick ass!" He replied with, "Hey, thanks man," and shook my hand and kept walking. Fuck off, that was amazing for me.

Anyhow, we kept on searching for the local marine life exhibit and happened upon it just as the event was ending and people were leaving. Cover was twelve bucks and we probably wouldn't have been able to pay to get in anyways. So we walked in like we owned the place ignoring the doorman/woman's shouts. It was a nice set up. Cool exhibits, paintings on the walls, and a live band breaking down their equipment. Also, Data from the Goonies.

So as we saw people taking the paintings down, we asked how to get our paintings on the walls of the next party. We got business cards and names and connects. We'll be hitting them up shortly for an exhibit. AND they were handing out pumpkins as party favors. Free entry, cool fish, agreements, AND pumpkins? Win.

So we came up with this idea for a swear jar where people would put money in for a drawing of their favorite curse word: commissioned swears. Not in the best taste but some people will totally pay money for this.

Had some prints available. There's one left and it's been painted with aerosol and donated to the ART VULUPS project. Google it.

Here's Chris. David of Slum Circus held a "Drink and Draw" party which I had to attend and met Chris and a few other artists. We were all drawing and drinking (no way). Chris is trying to get back into the fun side of art. Shoot for the stars and all that.

Riverside Artswalk and MiniMogul

Here's a few reference photos of the haters that earned their own section in my new comic 140 out at LBCC (Oct 29). Halfway decent ills to follow.

I flaked on a friend last week in the Riverside Artswalk and that was a dick move on my part. I was in the area just in case I got his call so I could make good but no dice. During my stroll I ran into Dan Nguyen who I met in 09 while we painted at a little show called "The Writing Is On the Wall." If you're in the I.E. art at all you've seen his stuff. If you're in the LA art at all and you haven't seen his stuff you will soon. He was working on this piece with a cool chap named Teebs.
Squirrels and guns. Fuck yeah.
This dude was walking around all night with his sign "yHomeless" or some such nonsense. He was being filmed so I'm waiting for that meme to pop up somewhere.
Went back to catch Dan and Teebs finished work.
Cosme of Division 9 fame as well as a few other folks suggested the Bicycle show at Sweeney to me. Sweeney has been out of service for a while, or so I was told, so I was stoked to get back through those doors. I walked right into this.

These girls know what they're doing and I was down to show with them. Cool artists and space abound. They're looking to put together another one in November and I'm down for that too if they need me.

...but deflating two tires on a car means that even if a person has a spare tire they're still going to have to ride on one deflated tire which could damage it beyond repair. This means that person needs to buy a new tire which costs money that you ain't gonna give them. In turn, this means that this is no longer a prank.

UPDATE: Actually, tires were slashed. Not simply deflated. Son of a bitch.

Dinosaurs and Tarantulas

Drew some stuff this weekend and saw some dinosaurs. That's pretty much all you need to know.
Drew some fellow Mexicans at El Pollo Loco where they were eating and working.
Then a comic about squealing.
Went to the LA County Fair. Five bucks after five Wednesday through Friday. Be there.
They've got penis-style corn dogs.
And horse-sized grills.
And horses.
And Dinosaurs combined with terrible Jurassic Park rip-offs?...Awesome!
Uh-oh, the dinosaurs broke free and broke some windows.
Good thing we've got guns.

So here's one of the panels I'm working on for the comic tentatively know as 140. Patent pending for all you sheisty bastards out there who be sheisting. Main character? Side character? WHO KNOWS?! In other news regarding yon comic, Erin Gibson, of Infomania's Modern Lady fame just contributed to the comic and I gotta say it was a good one. That's two down...dare I try to get the entire team to contribute to my comic? Would Sarah Haskins be down?... Let's see what can be seen...
Also here's a quick sketch I made at a coffee shop in Riverside. I also found the paper on the ground in Riverside just a block or so away...completely composed in Riverside. Listened to my friend Joshua's band the Oxbloods via his laptop and let my ink flow as the music flowed in my head. Josh turned up in the drawing as well as a rip of Jeff Soto and a character that walked in. Triple Threat...good title. Good not great.

Working steadily on the Burn Issue and 140. Gotta get em done for the Long Beach Comic Convention. Stay up, people. More to come.

Alien Tattoo

So a couple of weeks ago I put out a blast on Craigslist offering free art for the first band/musician/rapper/polka specialist to tweet me AND follow me. Congratulations to Mike "The Alien" E.T. or @CrimsonFaced for hitting me the quickest. I'll probably be doing this again since it turned out some halfway decent art and was pretty fun. Stay tuned (get it?) for more.
In other news I'm diligently working on too many things at once but here's some nice stuff coming into fruition: a tattoo design I was commissioned to do has made it to the homeslice's arm. I'm sincerely honored someone would mark themselves with my drawing. Not really what it's about but it's a nice thought anyhow. Thanks, again!

Do you need an editor at your fashion zine? I found a few errors in your last email including but not limited to using "your" instead of "you're" and the lack of capitalization and a missing S in Picasso.

Also, there were some confusing statements where you referred to me as "untalented" and then as Picasso. Are you trying to say Picasso was untalented? Furthermore, in one of your initial emails you referred to my work with "this is really good i would like to print it in the sept issue."

This Saturday I'm Gonna Do LA So Hard...

Other than that? Ah, yes. Promptly at 9pm I'll be painting, live, or live-painting, at the Cannibal Flower show (tenth anniversary, kids) in downtown, LA. Here's a pic from their last show I was a part of:As I understand it, that's the resident DJ Mr. Onederful posing in front of my piece "I'm A Poet And You Knoet." Depression and Rug Burn

So the more real jobs I apply to and the more real jobs that don't call me back the more I'm filled with this disgusting black shit that eats away at my lungs and I gasp for air and start to sweat and think about how I'll never get to accomplish any of the goals I'm setting for myself because art needs to be funded somehow and I say, "Fuck off, Depression. You weren't invited to this party." So I draw something and I feel better and I apply for another real job and the cycle repeats itself. Here's some of that stuff I drew to give me a quick fix. More tiny sketches for the comic's cover. Working on other comics too. Fuck I've got to get off my ass and onto those comics.

Also, decided to give away some free album/cd/poster/cover/whateverthehellyouwant artwork via twitter and craigslist. Rappers don't know how to read directions.

I would like for it to take shape of a dutch looking cookie jar, with a fabric hemp type name plate over the jar which would have the name of the collective on there. I want this logo to look artsy, but realistic. Definitely not photoshopped realistic where images are cut out, but actually designed. If this is something that you could handle, i'd love to see what you can come up with. Im also open to other ideas, if you think you could make something better that's going to look good, then im open to that.

Hello Andrew,

I appreciate your interest in my work and your clear appreciation for "a few other people that are coming up with...designs as well." Typically when a business owner wants a logo they will look through an artists/designers portfolio to see their past work and decide whether or not that work is up to par with the design the client needs and if it can be executed properly. If the client feels the artist can do the work, the client will offer a payment to the artist within the client's budget of course and the artist will agree/disagree to do the required work.

In other cases, a company may offer a contest to artists/designers and hold a public voting session for a completed design. The artists involved will have their work seen by the public and gain exposure so they have some incentive for doing the work.

You however have decided to have a bunch of people work for free with nothing to offer in return. The artist who creates the design you choose will get fifty dollars while the rest of the workers receive nothing for their time and efforts. I'd love to compete in your contest but I've got other things to do that don't pay either. Thanks for the time.

Composing a book with dialogue, text, and direction all written in tweets. Tweet @eyedraugh and get your dialogue, text, or direction in the book along with your name or Twitter handle. Your tweet can be as random or as irrational as you want and I will try to include them all. Movie quotes or proverbs may work well. Haikus and sound effects would be good too. Pretty much anything under 140 characters. I've got my first page done. Start tweeting folks. Suggestions, questions, comments, and complaints are all welcome. I'm steeling myself up to draw some vulgar shit, here.
